A magaságyás használata számos előnnyel jár a kertészkedésben, egyrészt megkíméli az ember derekát, hiszen nem kell túlságosan mélyre hajolni az ültetéshez vagy a gyomláláshoz, másrészt a beültetendő talaj minősége könnyebben szabályozható. Ennek oka hogy a magaságyásba halmozott virágföld tápanyagokban gazdag és jól szellőző, gyom is kevésbé nő benne. Kiváló a vízelvezetése, így elkerülhetők a pangó vízből adódó problémák. Ráadásul a magaságyás gyorsabban felmelegszik tavasszal, aminek köszönhetően már egészen korán el lehet kezdeni vele az ültetgetést. Ha mindez még nem győzött volna meg, védi a növényeket a kártevőktől, például vakondoktól és csigáktól, valamint kisebb területen is hatékonyan lehet benne termeszteni. @nettlesandpetals Creating a NO-DIG raised bed I’m in the process of setting up the new vegetable garden and it’s finally time to create the growing beds! And of course they are all going to be created utilising the ‘no-dig’ or minimal disturbance methodology. By mulching instead of digging or tilling, we mimic natural processes and keep the soil structure intact. The myriad of life within can then thrive whilst creating a symbiotic relationship with the plants you then grow, increasing yields and boosting biodiversity. There’s also far less weeds and effort once they are made! I mainly create ground beds, but today I’m creating a quick raised bed and am using two untreated scaffold boards to create the frame of the and I just screw them together using wood screws. I then roll out some recycled packaging cardboard as the base mulching layer to help suppress the existing vegetation. You could just use cardboard boxes but just remove all tape, staples and don’t use ones coated in plastic or covered in inks. You can then water the cardboard to help speed up decomposition, but it’s still winter here so we’ll have lots of rain anyway. I then lay the frame back down on top and it’s time for some organic compost from my friends over @Plantgrow it’s 100% natural, vegan and chemical free they have kindly guven me a disciunt code to share, so use code: NETTLESANDPETALS for 10% off if youd like to tey some. I add around 6”, but If your bed is quite deep you could add some organic matter such as leaves and branches, or screened garden soil before a good layer of compost. I then just rake it out evenly and tamp it down to compact slightly and create a nice planting surface. And that’s the bed ready to go, it’s as easy as that! You could then add a layer of wood chips around the perimeter to stop grass and weeds encroaching on the bed, or just remove the excess cardboard. Then just get planting! @simonakeroydgardener Simple and free way to create a raised bed. Couldn’t be easier. Pallets are easy to get hold of and are usually free. Use heat treated pallets (look for HT logos or similar on the pallet) as opposed to ones treated with wood preservative.
